What is Mini Touring Car Radio Controlled Car Racing?
Mini Touring Cars are built to the same size as the well-known M Chassis cars from Tamiya and a few other brands. While M Chassis models are usually front-wheel drive (FWD), with the odd rear-wheel drive (RWD) version, Mini Touring Cars mix things up a bit. You’ll find both 4WD and 2WD options in the M-TC world – so whether you’re after all-wheel traction or a simpler drivetrain, there’s something to suit your style.
Who is Mini Touring Car (MTC) RC Car Racing for?
M-TC is ideal for anyone looking to get into RC racing without breaking the bank. Whether you’re a total beginner, a curious parent and child, or a long-time racer after a fun and affordable class, M-TC fits the bill.
It was designed (in 2015) to offer competitive racing for “PlayStation money,” making it accessible to more people. The 1/12th scale cars are perfect for small club tracks, and with both 4WD and 2WD options, there’s something for every driving style.
In short – if you want close, exciting racing without the high price tag, M-TC is for you.

How much does Mini Touring Car (MTC) Racing Cost?
The cost of entering MTC racing can vary based on the quality and brand of components chosen. Here’s a breakdown of essential items
01. Chassis
The chassis serves as the foundation of an MTC car, influencing its performance and handling characteristics. Common materials include fiberglass and carbon fibre.
Prices range from £150 to £300, depending on the brand and features.
02. Motor (13.5 / 17.5 21.5 / 20 Turn)
The motor dictates the car’s speed and acceleration. The 3 sub-classes of MTC run a 13.5, 17.5 and 21.5 turn brushless motor (with an option to run a 20 turn brushed motor in the FWD sub-class). These motors are widely available from various manufacturers, allowing racers to choose based on brand preference and budget.
Typically priced between £40 and £80.
03. Electronic Speed Controller (ESC)
The ESC regulates the motor’s power, affecting throttle response and braking. These are also the components that can send costs spiralling out of control – so the MTC class has written into it’s rules that ESCs over £75 inc VAT are ineligible for national events (club level enforcement of this rule is on a case by case basis)
Costs range from £15 to £75.
04. LiPo Batteries (2s)
Powering the car, 2S (7.4/7.6V) LiPo batteries are standard in MTC racing. They offer a balance between weight and power output, essential for maintaining the car’s agility and speed. Battery quality influences performance and safety, making it crucial to select reputable brands.
Generally priced between £30 and £80.
05. Foam or Rubber Tyres
Foam and rubber tyres provide the necessary grip on indoor carpet tracks. Their hardness (measured in shore) affects traction and handling. Softer tyres offer more grip but wear faster, while harder tyres last longer with reduced traction.
A set usually costs around £12 to £30.
06. Bodies
The body shell impacts aerodynamics and aesthetics. Made from lightweight materials like lexan or polycarbonate, bodies come in various designs to suit personal style and performance needs.
Prices vary from £15 to £30.
